Technical Report and Technical Specification

The Technical Report and Technical Specification provide direction on the rationale of the Pediatric Quality Indicators (PDIs). It also provides an overview of the methods used to identify, select, and evaluate the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Quality Indicators (QIs), a summary of the literature based evidence, empirical rates based on the State Inpatient Databases, and detailed definitions for each pediatric QI. Potential users of this document include hospitals, State data organizations, and hospital associations.

Covariates Used in Risk Adjustment

Four sets of covariates are  provided for the PDIs in two documents.  For provider level indicators, you may choose between a reference population that includes "Present on Admission" data (new in v3.1), and the other that does not.  For Area level indicators you may choose between risk adjustment based on age or based on age and the socioeconomic decile of each county.  These versions correspond to the selections you may make within the QI software.  (SAS Control file covariate settings, WinQI provider covariates is determined automatically based on the loaded data and area covariates may be selected on the report options.)
